Blizzard Box Deliveries

Description:

Meals on Wheels provides a box of  shelf stable meals (approx 10# each) for our meal recipients in the event that we are unable to deliver due to bad weather. These boxes can be delivered during the day they're picked up, or within the next few weekdays, but need to be distributed promptly, preferably before November 24th.

Note: If you would like to deliver to a specific route, requests will be honored first come, 'first served.' Otherwise, we will assign a route at pickup.
Location:

  • Pick up Blizzard Boxes from Canteen Services, 3224 Odd Fellows Road
  • Delivery Sheet will be provided for each route

Date of Current Needs:
- pick up on Nov 17 or 18
- deliver by Nov 24

Time required:
Time varies depending on number of stops on the route (approx 8 - 10), and how long you are able to visit.  Your time  to deliver these Blizzard Boxes, and perhaps chat for a few minutes will be a warm holiday treat!

Poinsettia Deliveries

Description:
We deliver poinsettias to each home that we serve, to recognize the joy of the season.

Note: If you would like to deliver a specific route, sign-ups are accepted on a first come basis!

Location:
- pick up Poinsettias from Virginia Garden Supply on Boonsboro Road
- route sheet will be provided

Date of Current Needs:
- available for pick up Tues Dec 8, Wed Dec 9, or Thurs Dec 10
- BUT - we ask that they be delivered SAME DAY
- deliveries are time sensitive, since poinsettias cannot remain in the vehicle during cold weather!

Time required:
- time varies depending on number of poinsettias (approx 9-12), and how long you are able to visit

Your time to deliver this present, and perhaps chat for a few minutes will likely be the best gift of all.

Please indicate your projected pickup/delivery date in the signup comments; can adjust if necessary, but this will give us an idea of when you're coming!

Deliver Supplemental Food Boxes

Description:

Meals on Wheels collaborates with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank to ensure that our most food insecure recipients periodically receive an extra delivery of food staples. These boxes can be delivered during the day they're picked up, or within the next few weekdays, but need to be distributed promptly, preferably within 48 hours

Location:

  • Pick up Supplemental Food Boxes from St Paul's Church Undercroft, 7th Street between Madison & Clay (one-way, approch from Madison)
  • stay in your vehicle, pull up to the door and we will load
  • Delivery Sheet will be provided for each route

Date of Current Needs:
- pick up on Tuesday, December 15 between 12:30 and 4:30pm
- deliver within 48 hours

Time required:
Time varies depending on number of stops on the route (approx 8 - 10), and how long you are able to (socially distanced) chat.  

Your time  to deliver these Supplemental Food Boxes, and perhaps chat for a few minutes will be an extra-special holiday treat!

Holiday Deliveries

We deliver meals on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Eve (as well as Memorial Day and Labor Day). If you, and/or your family, would like to get involved, give us a call.

Animeals Delivery Drivers

Location:

  • pick up order from MOW office
  • deliver to specified route
  • route sheet provided

Date of Current Needs:

  • these routes are currently delivered by staff until physical distancing restrictions relax 

Time required:

  • delivery will take approximately 1 hour

Description:

Companionship comes in all shapes and sizes! We know that some of our recipients have companion pets who ‘mean the world’ to them. When food and budgets get tight, these pets vie for nourishment, sometimes eating from the meals we deliver (which is not good for either the person OR the pet!)

Our Animeals program provides a monthly subsidy of donated pet food to help alleviate that strain.

Your delivery will provide appropriate food — pet food — for those furry friends! We bet you will receive a special thank you in the form of wags, wiggles, and purrs!

Deliver Birthday Boxes

Location:

  • pick up boxes from MOW office
  • deliver to meal recipients within 2-3 days of stated birthday

Description:

Meals on Wheels is blessed by the many kind individuals and groups who pack and wrap Birthday Boxes for our meal recipients: a shoebox or something similar, festively wrapped, and filled with all sorts of treats sure to make a total stranger smile on their special day! For some of our recipients, it’s their favorite gift they receive!

Your time to deliver this present, and perhaps chat for a few minutes will likely be the best gift of all.

Wrap/Fill/Provide Birthday Boxes

We provide a birthday box to each of our meal recipients on their special day. This is a wonderful opportunity for organizations or individuals to fill and wrap boxes that will be especially meaningful.

Deliver Emergency Preparedness Kits

Meals on Wheels collaborated with the Red Cross, Genworth, and several other non-profits to fill 'emergency kits' for our most insecure recipients. These backpacks contain a flashlight and batteries, water, hand sanitizer, first aid supplies and suggestions for customization - what each home needs to have on hand before any inclement weather hits our area.

Fold and Package MOW Notecards

Description:

A favorite local fundraiser for over a decade, Meals on Wheels notecards feature the talent of local artists which they donate for our use. Since we produce these cards in-house on donated product, this is a great, simple ‘revenue stream’ for our organization!

Your donated labor in folding and packaging these notecards for sale will ‘seal the deal!’

Description:

Meals on Wheels appeal letters contain time-sensitive information to keep our community informed and up to date.
Your donated labor helps us meet exacting USPO standards for bulk mail to keep our cost at the very minimum.

Research project consists of phone calls, making appropriate connections.

Internships

Several internships are available throughout the year for college students, for academic credit, or simply for experience.  Please inuire/apply through your educational institution.


Tray Favors

During the holidays, we often distribute small tray favors with meals. This could include cards, notes, magnets or decorations. Call for more details.


Artists

Submit copies of your artwork for possible use on our note cards. New packages are created yearly.


Special Events / Seasonal Opportunities

Opportunities to help during special events such as our golf tournament, Let’s Do Lunch Fundraiser and other activities are also available.
